400 I Reflection

Reflection 400I Perspectives On Gerontology

Gerontology 400I is introductory course on Gerontology, the class reviewed issues that affect senior citizens including retirement planning, health planning, geriatric assessment and issues regarding senior citizens in minority groups. The class weekly journal in addition Professor Maria Claver had the class do service learning with different organizations that help senior citizens. I found the class informative and useful, because I currently work with senior citizens through United Healthcare and AARP. The class provided guidance for students working with seniors. The class readings from the textbook dived aging into three different types of aging or categories including the following young old, middle old, and old old. Senior citizens come from different generations is important to keep this in mind not all issues that affect senior citizens are the same. For instance a World War II generation senior will have different concerns and issues than a baby boomer. Additionally their value set may not be aligned. One of important areas covered in class was the review of Social Security and Medicare. In addition the review of. Social Security and Medicare was Medical. Medical affects a great number of seniors who are living in poverty. This review of social programs is important because in California we have a diverse population. Additionally many of the jobs in gerontology are working in social programs providing social services too low income seniors. I found this portion of the class interesting because I am in touch the number of seniors who have limited resources because I sell Medicare Complete through United Healthcare.  In addition we studied health concerns affecting different diverse populations one of the more interesting aspects of this was the African American community. There is a divergence between White Americans and Black Americans most African American shorter life expectancies than Caucasian Americans. Interesting that if they reached the age of 68 were expected to live longer than their White counterpart. In addition we studied the Spanish/Mexican communities and found that immigrants to the United States are less likely to take advantage services provided to seniors.  Additionally we reviewed how religion was important to senior citizens and the church could provide needed services to the senior community.

I did my service learning at United Healthcare and additionally at Long Beach Senior Facility. I worked on enrolling seniors into Medicare Complete. I found this process both interesting and informative. I would suggest the most people take a class reviewing seniors issues, because public policy is often affected by voters and senior citizens as a cohort vote more frequently than their junior counterparts. Another interesting activity in the class was the video exposed senior sexuality. Maria made the class informative and engaging in addition class participation was encouraged and expected. I found the class to be a rewarding experience including the service learning component. The service learning allowed class members to see the real world not typically visible to university students. I would not be surprised to find that people accepted positions with the facility they worked with, this is especially important because in the current job market unemployment for individuals between 18 and 35 is the highest it’s been in a generation. In closing I would recommend students from different disciplines be required to take a class to prepare them for the real world.
