Religion Providing Services

The Three Legged Stool concept of health that of psychological health, social health and physiological health covered in the gerontology view of health can be a template to help religious organizations to reach out to its parishioner population of elder adults. Churches since the middle ages have been involved in building and maintaining hospitals the Catholic Hospitals have been a role model to building hospitals both in Europe and the United States. The church can provide services that meet the needs of elder adults in following ways. Outreach both in services such as Meals on Wheels but also in providing religious services for those elder adults who may be confined to their homes and unable to attend services.

·         Community Outreach: to meet all areas of paradigm of social, psychological, physiological  

a)      In home care programs provided by the church

b)      Meals on Wheels

c)      Christian services on wheels

 

·         Social Groups for Seniors: to keep seniors active and thus allowing seniors to participate in meaningful exchanges both with other seniors and younger members of congregation

·         Programs for families  

a)      Respite care: For family members taken care of elderly adults

b)      Group Share programs (i.e. adopt a grandparent or adopt a grandchild as a two way program for children and elderly adults)

c)      Oral History Programs  for Elder Adults to record their history and provide and depository   of their history (Moron Church and genealogy)

d)                 

Additional Programs

a)      Programs can be designed as needed by the congregation or the elder population

b)      Meeting the needs of elder population

Being involved in faith based organizations provides a number of the important interactions need for aging healthy including but limited to spiritual health. Additionally if groups do not offer these types of programs they may not be offered anywhere else. As gerontologist professionals a need is present to work with religious based organizations to develop programs that meet the need of elder adults.
